Stevie’s custom-spec twist on his legendary “Number One” Strat
Stevie Ray Vaughan’s beautifully battered “Number One” Stratocaster is undoubtedly one of the most iconic instruments in 6-string history. It’s the guitar that helped usher the all-but-forgotten blues back into the mainstream after Stevie’s star role on David Bowie’s Let’s Dance and his classic albums with Double Trouble. At the height of his fame, Fender teamed with Stevie to design a signature Stratocaster that would take point from his “Number One” and integrate several modified specs per Stevie’s ever-evolving tastes. Released two years after Stevie’s tragic passing in 1990, the Stevie Ray Vaughan signature Stratocaster pays faithful tribute to Stevie’s enduring influence and has stood as an all-time Fender classic for more than three decades of production.
Unleash a flood of Texas-tinged tones
What pickups could be more fitting for Texas’ most iconic bluesman than Fender’s Texas Special single-coils? In fact, while they’re not technically signature pickups, Stevie was heavily involved in the creation and design of these single-coils from the very start — no wonder they’ve endured as a standard-issue Stratocaster set for more than three decades. Crafted with Alnico V magnets and overwound for a hotter, more hard-hitting sound, Texas Special single-coils simply excel at Stevie’s high-power blend of bluesy rock brilliance. Moreover, Sweetwater’s Strat slingers of all styles have come to sing the praises of Texas Special pickups for their potent blend of bluesy heat and sonic versatility.
A modded-out neck set to Stevie's specs
While Stevie’s original "Number One" vintage Strat would have started with a 7.25-inch radius when it first left the factory, years of custom refrets and a penchant for wide, emotive bends had left him with a preference for flatter fingerboards. Thus, Stevie spec’d his signature Stratocaster’s pau ferro fingerboard out with a 12-inch radius — a spec rarely seen on standard Stratocasters and a boon to any player who regularly tears out massive multi-step bends in the fingerboard’s higher register. This fingerboard stands supported by an early 1960s-style thick oval neck profile that comfortably fills out your palm, directly inspired by the neck on Stevie’s mongrel 1962/1963 vintage Stratocaster.

There’s a very, very short list of guitars in music history that can claim to match the fame and influence of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s bruised and battered “Number One” Stratocaster. The Fender Stevie Ray Vaughan Stratocaster pays tribute to that iconic axe, merging the guitar’s original vintage specs with several key modifications requested by Stevie himself. Stevie’s original Strat consisted of a 1962 body mated to a 1963 neck, and this guitar authentically replicates that classic Fullerton foundation with a lightweight alder body and a thick oval profile maple neck. You’ll enjoy effortless bends and lightspeed licks up and down the pau ferro fingerboard thanks to its flat 12-inch radius, while a set of golden American Vintage tuning machines keep your strings pitch-perfect. As for the tone, a trio of scorching Texas Special pickups calls up a crossfire of hard-hitting Stratocaster sonics laden with biting midrange, crystal-clear highs, and a firm low-end punch. Complete with Stevie’s signature “SRV” pickguard and a left-handed gold synchronized tremolo (a tip of the hat to Stevie’s hero, Jimi Hendrix), the Fender Stevie Ray Vaughan Stratocaster puts the soulful sound and style of a true 6-string legend in your hands.
